Concrete Slab and Foundation Installation in Cedar Rapids, IA

Foundation and slab work is the structural concrete under a building: new footings, stem walls that carry the house's load down to them, and the slab itself. It's what you need for an addition, a garage, or a foundation that has failed. We do the ground-up part: excavation, footings, walls, slab, and grading the ground so water runs away from the house when we're done.

Signs you need foundation or slab work

Cracks in basement walls are the usual first sign, especially ones that run in a stair-step pattern or are wider at the top than the bottom. Floors that slope or feel uneven are another. So are doors and windows that used to work and now stick or won't latch, because the framing may have shifted with the foundation under it. A basement that takes on water after heavy rain belongs on the list too.

The Cedar River's 2008 flood put water around a large part of Cedar Rapids and damaged thousands of houses. If your home is in an area that flooded, we look closely at the foundation and the ground around it, even if it's been years since the water went down.

For an addition or new garage, the sign is simpler: you need a proper foundation where there isn't one, or the old one has to come out and be replaced.

How we scope the job before we quote

We come out and look before we put a price on anything. We measure the existing structure, read the grades around the house, and note where rain runs off and where it pools. If you're near the river or in a low spot, that gets extra attention because it affects the excavation and what we pour.

We also go over what you're building. A garage slab and a stem-wall foundation for a house addition are different jobs with different loads, and the footings and reinforcement follow from that. Everything we find goes into the written quote, so you can see what's included.

The 2020 derecho brought hurricane-force winds through Cedar Rapids. If the concrete is carrying a garage or another exposed structure, we plan the footings with that kind of storm in mind.

What we do on your property

We mark out the work area and excavate to the depth the job calls for. Then we lay a compacted gravel subbase, which gives the concrete a firm, draining bed so the slab is less likely to settle unevenly.

For a stem-wall foundation, the footing rebar goes in before any concrete. We place the concrete in the forms, strike it off to grade with a screed, and bull-float the surface right after.

Then we cure the concrete and leave it alone while it gains strength. Once the foundation is complete, we backfill between the excavation and the walls where the job needs it. The last step is grading the ground to slope away from the house, which does more than anything else to keep water from sitting against the new work.

What it costs

Stem-wall foundation installation runs $6 to $18 per square foot. Call and we'll talk through a typical range; the exact number is confirmed after we've seen the job.

The structure you're building moves the price more than anything else. A plain slab for a garage floor or shed costs the least per square foot. A full stem-wall foundation for an addition, with deeper footings and more rebar, sits higher. Extra gravel or unexpected conditions in the excavation can add to it. Each of those gets its own line in the written quote, so the invoice matches what we told you.

What to Expect

In plain terms, expect steps like these:

  • Place plumbing or electrical conduits required beneath the slab, then install the specified wire mesh or rebar on supports so it stays at the designed elevation during the pour.
