What a walkway costs
A standard-finish concrete walkway or sidewalk runs $8 to $12 per square foot, installed. Call with a rough length and width and we'll give you a ballpark inside that range; the firm number comes after we've walked the route.
Size moves the price most, because material and labor scale together. A short garden strip costs far less than a long front-entrance walk. After size, the main cost drivers are what has to come out first (an old slab or pavers means more labor to break up and haul), how much digging the ground needs, and how easily we can get tools and material to the site. Each upgrade beyond a standard finish gets its own line on the quote.
Drainage gets checked before we dig
Clyde soils sit in the lower drainageways and concave spots around Cedar Rapids, and they drain poorly. If your path runs through a low area like that, water will collect under it. With hard winter freezes cycling that water between frozen and thawed, it will lift and crack a slab that was poured well. So we look at how your site drains before we excavate. Any extra base work the drainage calls for goes into the quote as its own line before we pour.

How we build it
We start by laying out the route with mason's string and stakes. You can see the line and confirm the width and curve before any ground is cut.
Then we strip the existing surface with a sod cutter and shovel and dig down to the base depth. The gravel base goes in next, and we dampen it without leaving standing water. That keeps the base tight so the concrete doesn't lose moisture into dry stone.
With the forms set along the edges, we place and spread the concrete within them, screed it to the intended profile, and float the surface. An edger run along the forms gives the edges a clean, finished line. Cold, generally dry winters and warm, humid summers mean we plan each pour around the season's cold and moisture conditions.
How long it takes
The schedule depends on the length of the path, how much old material we're removing, and the weather during the pour and early cure. A short, clear run goes quickly. A longer walk with demolition, or one that needs base repair for drainage, takes longer. The quote carries a timeline based on what we see on your site, and if we open the ground and find something that changes it, we tell you right then.

Signs a path needs replacing
Settlement is the clearest sign. Sections that have sunk or tilted, or that hold water after rain, mean the base underneath has moved, and patching won't hold that. Cracks running in several directions, especially where the pieces have shifted or one edge sits higher than the next, point to the same problem.
Crumbling edges are the other one. Edges take the most wear, and once they start breaking away they keep going. If you're stepping around a trip hazard every day, call us before someone trips on it.
How It Works
For work like this, it tends to involve:
- Stake out the walkway, run mason’s string to mark its edges, and set the intended slope.
- Remove sod and excavate the path to accommodate the concrete and subbase.
